چکیده

 To describe the stimulus for exercise-induced bronchoconstriction.  To describe the different mechanisms whereby this stimulus may act to cause the airways to narrow in asthmatics and athletes.  To describe the relevance of the stimulus and mechanism to protocols to diagnose exercise-induced bronchoconstriction.  To describe the infl ammatory mediators involved in exercise-induced bronchoconstriction.  To describe how and why airway injury could contribute to the pathogenesis of airway hyperresponsiveness and exercise-induced bronchoconstriction in athletes.

Mechanisms of bronchoconstriction from nonimmunologic environmental stimuli.

Athma is characterized by repeated episodes of bronchoconstriction, often triggered by environmental stimuli. Since much of the therapy of asthma is aimed at preventing these episodes of bronchoconstriction, understanding the mechanisms by which environmental stimuli cause bronchoconstriction has obvious clinical importance. This review will discuss the general mechanisms by which inhaled agent...

Exercise-induced bronchoconstriction as an expression of bronchial hyperreactivity: a study of its mechanisms in children.

The mechanism of exercise-induced bronchoconstriction (EIB) was studied by observing the protective effects of several aerosol agents in a double-blind, randomised trial. Exercise-induced bronchoconstriction was not affected by placebo, but was reduced by each agent used (p less than 0.001). Blocking the parasympathetic system had the weakest effect, while beta 2 adrenergic stimulation produced...

Prevalence of exercise-induced bronchoconstriction and exercise-induced laryngeal obstruction in a general adolescent population.

BACKGROUND Exercise-induced respiratory symptoms are common among adolescents. Exercise is a known stimulus for transient narrowing of the airways, such as exercise-induced bronchoconstriction (EIB) and exercise-induced laryngeal obstruction (EILO). Our aim was to investigate the prevalence of EIB and EILO in a general population of adolescents. METHODS In this cross-sectional study, a questi...

Exercise and airway injury in athletes.

Olympic level athletes present an increased risk for asthma and allergy, especially those who take part in endurance sports, such as swimming or running, and in winter sports. Classical postulated mechanisms behind EIA include the osmotic, or airway-drying, hypothesis. Hyperventilation leads to evaporation of water and the airway surface liquid becomes hyperosmolar, providing a stimulus for wat...

Exercise-induced bronchoconstriction in elite long-distance runners in Brazil.

OBJECTIVE To determine the prevalence of exercise-induced bronchoconstriction among elite long-distance runners in Brazil and whether there is a difference in the training loads among athletes with and without exercise-induced bronchoconstriction. METHODS This was a cross-sectional study involving elite long-distance runners with neither current asthma symptoms nor a diagnosis of exercise-ind...
